Your Disaster Preparedness Plans May Be Impacted By COVID-19
The 2020 Hurricane Season is once again expected to reach an above average season with 13-19 named storms, 6-10 hurricanes and possibly 3-6 major hurricanes. The average hurricane season consists of 12 named storms of which 6 become hurricanes and 3 become major hurricanes. As many of you already know, hurricanes are one of nature’s most powerful and destructive phenomena. But this year, hurricane season will be occurring during a pandemic and may complicate the preparation and evacuation plans.
It is important to stay prepared for all disasters especially hurricanes. NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) notes that our current disaster preparedness plans may be impacted by COVID-19. Be sure to check with local officials when updating your evacuation shelters to make sure they are open during this time due to COVID-19. If your plan involves evacuating to a community shelter, be sure to follow the latest guidelines from the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) that will help you prepare and lower your risk of infection while staying safe in a shelter.
To help you prepare, have your business start gathering supplies, preparing the property and planning for a possible emergency well before it happens. The National Hurricane Survival Initiative has created a checklist to help you prepare:
- Protect property
- Protect important documents and information
- Keep a preparedness checklist
Hurricane preparedness is critically important. For additional information download FEMA’s Business Toolkit. Don’t forget you may need to adjust any preparedness actions you are taking based on the latest health and safety guidelines from the CDC and our local officials.
